Exciting news about our November Communion service

Our next Lichfield Diocese Deaf Church service of Holy Communion at Penkridge is on Sunday 27th November at 3pm. This date is Advent Sunday, the first Sunday in our period of preparation for the great celebration of Christmas. It also marks the starts of the new year for the Church, a time of new beginnings.

This year we are celebrating in a very special way. We are delighted to announce that Bishop Mark of Shrewsbury will be joining us to present certificates to the six candidates who successfully completed the two year course for Leadership in the Deaf Church. Congratulations to Malcolm Johnson, Keith Ryan, Judith Talbot, Diane & David Wells and Evie Wilcox. They will now begin helping our Chaplain and our two Licenced Readers to lead our services. The photograph shows the group a long time ago when they had completed only their second study module. During the course they completed ten modules altogether. Some also did an advanced module to become Pastoral Visitors for the Deaf Church, learning how to visit and take Holy Communion to people who are ill at home or in hospital.

This was the first training course for our Diocese to be developed specifically for the Deaf Church and delivered in BSL. Thanks to the Diocese of Lichfield Training team for supporting our aim to have a Deaf training pathway, and to Revd Lee for devising and teaching the course.

Please tell your friends about this special service so that we can give our Bishop a good Deaf Church welcome, and celebrate together all the hard work and commitment of those who are receiving certificates.

150 years of Reader Ministry

On Saturday 29th October Lichfield Diocese held a special celebration day to mark 150 years of Reader Ministry in the Church of England. In the morning the Readers met with Bishop Michael who spoke about his experiences and vision for Reader ministry. After lunch there was a celebration service in the Cathedral with Bishop Michael, Bishop Geoff of Stafford and guests from our link diocese in West Malaysia. The Church among Deaf People was represented by Ernest Seager and Elanie, his wife, with Gill, our Diocesan Officer among Deaf People, interpreting. It was a very joyful occasion. After the service all the Readers processed out of the great West Doors and photographs were taken. (Ernest is standing to the left of Bishop Michael next to the delegate from West Malaysia)

August & September at Deaf Church

Usually August is not too busy for Deaf Church, but everyone seems to have full diaries and we have been unable to find a date for a trip out together! The Chaplaincy team here in Lichfield hopes you are all having a break and enjoying the sunshine.

Congratulations to church member Bernard Brookes from Stoke who celebrated his 90th birthday on 8 August.

Here are your diary dates for August and September,

Services in August:
August 14 - St Michael's, Penkridge 3pm. Our informal service of prayer, Bible readings and discussion.
August 28 - St Michael', Penkridge 3pm Holy Communion, followed by afternoon tea together.

Services in September:
September 4 - Evening Prayer at Stoke Deaf Centre, 4pm
Please note - our usual 2nd Sunday service will not take place this month. This is because most of our church members will be travelling to special events the day before. On September 10 Susan Myatt will be ordained for Baptist ministry at Tamworth, and Ernest Seager will be licensed as a Reader for the Deaf Church in Lichfield Cathedral. So our Penkridge service the following day has been cancelled. Please keep both Susan and Ernest in your prayers as they prepare for their new roles.
September 25 - St Michael's, Penkridge, 3pm Holy Communion. Preacher Jenny Weir-Priest.

Just to let  you know, our Harvest services this year will be at Stoke on 2 October and at Penkridge on 23 October.
